Give First

Proverbs 3:9
Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops

When Scripture speaks of firstfruits, it isn’t describing a financial formula; it’s describing a faith posture. Giving first is far less about mathematics and far more about surrender. Anyone can give from what’s left. Only someone who trusts God gives from what’s first. It’s the statement that before I know how everything will shake out… before I see how every bill will land… before I decide what I want… I choose to honor God. Giving first isn’t about God getting your money. It’s about God getting your confidence. It’s a declaration that says, “God, You go first in my heart, so You go first in my finances.”

Giving first pushes against our natural instinct to protect ourselves. The world trains us to prioritize ourselves, our comfort, and our fears. But the Kingdom teaches us something different. Throughout Scripture, God calls His people to bring the first and the best, not the leftovers and the leftover energy. Why? Because what you give first to reveals what you trust most. If you give first to worry, worry will shape you. If you give first to fear, fear will lead you. But if you give first to God, trust becomes your companion and peace becomes your reward.

This principle of first isn’t about what God needs; it’s about who He is. When the Israelites brought their firstfruits, they were declaring that God was their source, their sustainer, and their security. And that’s still true for us. When we give first, we anchor our hearts in the truth that God is trustworthy. We anchor our lives in His promises. And we loosen the grip of anxiety that finances often try to hold over us. Giving first is the quiet but powerful confession that we believe God is good and God is enough.

Today, ask yourself honestly: “What gets the first place in my heart?” Giving first is not about an amount; it’s about order. It’s about alignment. It’s about letting the Spirit reorder your priorities so your life reflects trust instead of fear. When you put God first, you’ll be surprised how quickly everything else finds its rightful place.

Prayer:
Father, help me to honor You with what comes first in my life. Teach me to trust You in ways that go beyond convenience and comfort. Reveal any area where fear has taken the lead, and give me the courage to put You first in my heart and in my finances. Shape me into someone who lives with open hands and a trusting spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
