Give the Tenth
Leviticus 27:30
A tithe of everything from the land belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord
Tithing is far more than an ancient practice; it’s a spiritual discipline designed to shape the heart. The tenth belongs to God not because He needs it, but because giving it forms something in us. When Scripture says the tithe is “holy,” it means it is set apart, distinct, different from the rest. Tithing reminds us that everything we have comes from Him. The breath in our lungs, the strength in our hands, the opportunities we didn’t earn, the resources entrusted to us. The tenth is not a tax. It’s a declaration of gratitude and reverence.
But something deeper happens when we give the tenth. It trains us to trust God with the ninety. Tithing aligns us with a Kingdom mindset that says, “God, I trust You more than I trust the numbers on paper.” The world trains us to believe that what we keep determines our security. The Kingdom teaches us that what we surrender determines our freedom. When we give the tenth, we loosen our grip on the earthly and tighten our grip on the eternal. We stop relying on our own ability to provide and lean into God’s faithfulness to sustain.
People often ask, “Why a tenth?” Because a tenth is enough to be noticeable, enough to require trust, and enough to reveal the heart. It’s not a painful sacrifice, but it is a meaningful one. God isn’t after your money; He’s after your maturity. Tithing becomes a way for your heart to say, “Lord, You can have my trust.” It’s not legalism. It’s an invitation into blessing, peace, and alignment with God’s design.
If you’ve struggled with tithing, ask yourself: is it the amount or the trust? God never asks us to do something that harms us. He asks us to do things that form us. The tenth is holy because it shapes your heart into the image of a generous Father.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to see the tithe the way You see it, not as a burden but as a blessing. Teach me to give the tenth with joy, trust, and confidence in Your faithfulness. Break the fear and anxiety that tries to control my finances, and reshape my heart into one that honors You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
