What You Treasure, You Follow

Matthew 6:21 (NIV)
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Jesus didn’t say your treasure follows your heart. He said your heart follows your treasure. That flips the way we normally think about giving. Most people wait to feel generous before they act generous, but Jesus teaches that our giving actually leads our hearts. Your treasure is the steering wheel of your affections. Wherever you place it, your heart will eventually move in that direction. If you invest into the Kingdom, your passion for God grows. If you sow into temporary things, your heart drifts toward temporary things.

This is why generosity is more than a financial discipline; it’s a spiritual formation tool. God uses where we put our treasure to shape who we’re becoming. Look at your budget and it will preach louder than your words. Our spending reveals our priorities. It exposes what matters most. And Jesus isn’t using guilt here, He’s giving us a roadmap for spiritual alignment. If you want a heart for the things of God, begin sending your treasure there. If you want passion for missions, invest in missions. If you want a heart for the church, sow into the church. You don’t wait for the heart—you aim the heart.

This is why intentional generosity changes people. When you choose to give to God’s house, even when it stretches you, your heart begins to care more than it did before. You start to see the church differently. You start to see people differently. You start to see your purpose differently. Because the moment you invest in something, you become connected to it. God wired us that way. And He uses generosity to pull our hearts closer to His.

Today is about realigning your treasure so God can realign your heart. It’s about recognizing that you don’t drift into spiritual maturity—you decide your way there. Where you place your treasure today determines where your heart will be tomorrow.

Prayer:

Father, help me place my treasure where You want my heart to be. Align my priorities with Your priorities. Teach me to trust You with every part of my life, including my finances. Shape my heart as I choose to give with purpose and faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
