Trust Before Abundance
Mark 10:27 (NIV)
Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.
Generosity always begins with trust, not abundance. If we waited until we “felt ready,” saw more income, or hit the perfect financial moment, most of us would never give at all. Abundance doesn’t create generosity. Trust does. The Rich Young Ruler had everything; wealth, status, moral obedience. When Jesus invited him to surrender what he treasured most, he walked away sad. Why? Because abundance without trust becomes a prison. You can have plenty and still feel empty. You can be blessed and still be bound. Trust, not abundance, is what frees the heart to give.
Trusting God with your finances goes deeper than simply writing a check. Trust is saying, “God, You’re my provider, not my paycheck. You’re my security, not my savings. You’re my supply, not my circumstances.” Trust is choosing to obey even when the numbers don’t make sense. It’s choosing faith over fear. It’s choosing to believe that God will do more with your obedience than you can do with your control. Trust takes your eyes off what you have and places them on who He is.
And here’s the surprising part, trust becomes more difficult the more we have. Jesus said it’s harder for the rich to enter the Kingdom, not because money is evil, but because comfort can convince us we don’t need God. The more we accumulate, the more our hearts want to rely on what we’ve built rather than the One who blessed us. That’s why generosity is so important, it breaks the illusion of self-sufficiency. It pulls our hearts back to dependence on God. It keeps us grounded in faith, not finances.
Today, choose trust over abundance. Choose obedience over comfort. Choose to believe that God can do the impossible with what you place in His hands. When you trust Him first, abundance becomes a tool, not a temptation. A blessing, not a burden. A resource, not a replacement for God.
Prayer:
Father, teach me to trust You more than I trust what’s in my hands. Help me obey even when it stretches my faith. Free me from relying on abundance and anchor my heart in You alone. As I choose trust today, let generosity flow from a place of surrendered faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
