When Doubt Shows Up

Matthew 1:19
Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly.

Joseph loved Mary, but the news of her pregnancy turned his world upside down. He wanted to do the right thing, yet everything he knew about life and faith suddenly felt uncertain. This is what doubt often feels like. It shows up when life does not match what you expected and leaves you standing between what you believe and what you can understand.

Joseph’s reaction was not dramatic. It was practical. He planned to step away quietly because he could not make sense of what was happening. Many of us do the same. When doubt rises, we often pull back. We choose safe decisions. We protect our hearts. We distance ourselves from anything that feels risky. Doubt does not always look like rebellion. Sometimes it looks like quietly choosing what feels reasonable instead of trusting what God might be doing.

What Joseph did not realize was that God was already working in the middle of the confusion. The situation did not make sense, but it was still sacred. Even when Joseph felt unsure, God was not uncertain. And that is true for you. Your doubt does not intimidate God. It becomes the place where He shows you how steady His purpose really is.

Today, if you feel doubt rising in your heart, do not run from it. Bring it to God. Let Him meet you in the questions and steady you in the places where your understanding feels weak. He is working even when you cannot see how.

Prayer
Father, help me trust You when doubt shows up. When things do not make sense, remind me that You are still in control and still working for my good. Strengthen my faith and give me courage to stay close to You even when I do not understand the path ahead. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
