Goodness Follows Me

Psalm 23:6
“Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.”

David ends the psalm with absolute confidence. Not in his performance. Not in his decisions. Not in a perfect record or a flawless past. His confidence is in the Shepherd who goes before him and the Shepherd who follows behind him. God leads you into tomorrow, but He also covers yesterday. His goodness and His mercy do not trail behind you passively. They pursue you. They run toward the places you have been and the pieces of your story you wish were different.

This is exactly what Joseph experienced. His past was not messy because of sin, but it was messy because of uncertainty. His reputation was on the line. His engagement looked compromised. His plans were disrupted. He had every reason to fear the future because he did not understand what happened in his past. Yet the moment Joseph chose to trust God, goodness and mercy stepped into the places Joseph could not control. Goodness aligned Joseph with God’s purpose. Mercy covered Joseph from shame and misunderstanding. God redeemed what looked complicated and turned it into the very thing that carried salvation into the world.

Goodness in Hebrew speaks of things working the way God intended. Mercy speaks of God covering what you cannot fix. Together they tell the story Joseph lived out. God took the situation Joseph did not choose and made it holy. God took the confusion Joseph felt and turned it into calling. Joseph’s confidence did not come from understanding the path. It came from trusting the Shepherd who was guiding, protecting, and redeeming every step.

Today, rest in the truth that God is doing for you what He did for Joseph. He leads your future with wisdom. He stands with you in the present with strength. And He pursues your past with goodness and mercy. You are not walking with loose ends behind you. God is redeeming every part of your story, even the parts you wish had gone differently. The Shepherd goes before you, surrounds you, and follows behind you with unfailing love.

Prayer
Father, thank You for being the God who leads me, stays with me, and follows after me with goodness and mercy. Just as You covered Joseph and redeemed what he could not control, cover my life and redeem every part of my story. Help me trust Your goodness more than my regrets and Your mercy more than my mistakes. I choose to walk forward in confidence knowing that You are with me in all things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
