Running Lighter
Read: Hebrews 12:1–2 (Read it once through, then go back and read verse 1 slowly.)
Hebrews 12:1
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.”
The word therefore matters. Hebrews 12 is built on everything that came before it.
Because of the faith of those who went before.
Because of their endurance.
Because of their obedience and suffering and trust.
Therefore, we are called to respond.
The writer shifts the image from a story to a race. Faith is not something we admire. It is something we run with perseverance. And the first instruction is not to run faster, but to run lighter.
Notice the language. Not just sin, but everything that hinders.
Some weights are sinful.
Some weights are simply heavy.
Pain. Anxiety. Offense. Disappointment. Fear. Grief. Control.
These things may not be sinful, but they will slow you down if you keep carrying them. God never asked you to run while holding weight He intended you to release.
This is where perspective becomes practical. We do not throw off what we acknowledge. We throw off what we surrender.
Verse 2 tells us how.
We fix our eyes on Jesus.
Not on the weight.
Not on the past.
Not on the people who hurt us.
Not even on ourselves.
Jesus is the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. He started the race, He finished it, and He shows us how to endure. He endured the cross because of the joy set before Him. He saw beyond the suffering to what God was accomplishing.
Perspective changes when our focus changes.
⸻
Reflect
•What weight have you been trying to carry while running?
•Is it something God has asked you to release?
•Where have your eyes been fixed instead of on Jesus?
⸻
Prayer
Jesus, help me run the race You have set before me.
Show me what is hindering my progress.
Give me the courage to release what I was never meant to carry.
Teach me to fix my eyes on You, especially when the race feels hard.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
⸻
Action for Today
Ask God to reveal one weight that is slowing you down.
Make a conscious decision today not to pick it back up.
Tomorrow, we will finish the week by looking at how not to grow weary and lose heart.
