Don't Stop In the Fog
Hebrews 10:36
“You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.”
In 1952 Florence Chadwick stepped into the freezing waters off Catalina Island determined to swim to the California coast. For nearly sixteen hours she battled cold, exhaustion, and fear. Boats surrounded her to protect her from sharks. Then a thick fog rolled in. She could no longer see the shoreline. All she could see was gray. Discouraged and drained, she asked to be pulled from the water. When they lifted her into the boat, she learned she had stopped less than a mile from shore. Later she said, “If I could have seen the shore, I would have made it.” Her body didn’t quit first. Her vision did.
Spiritually, many believers live in that same fog. You’ve been praying, obeying, serving, and trusting, yet the breakthrough feels invisible. The promise seems distant. Faith can feel hardest when progress cannot be measured. Hebrews reminds us that perseverance is not optional in the life of faith. Promise is often on the other side of endurance. The fog does not mean God is absent. It means you are walking in a season where trust must carry what sight cannot confirm.
The tribes in Numbers 32 stopped one river short because they chose what they could see over what God had spoken. Florence stopped one mile short because the fog convinced her the shore wasn’t there. The danger is not exhaustion. The danger is surrendering when the finish line is closer than you realize. Faith keeps swimming when visibility drops. Faith says God’s word is more reliable than my eyes. Many people quit in the final mile because the fog feels permanent. But fog is temporary. Promise is not.
Today is an invitation to keep moving. Even if you cannot see the shoreline, keep the rhythm of obedience. Even if the promise feels delayed, refuse to settle in the middle of the water. Perseverance is not passive waiting. It is active trust. God does not waste the miles you swim in fog. He is forming endurance that can carry promise when it arrives.
Prayer
Lord, when I cannot see what You are doing, strengthen my endurance. Help me trust Your word more than my sight. Guard my heart from settling short of Your promise. Give me the courage to keep moving forward in seasons of fog. I choose perseverance today, believing You are faithful to finish what You started. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
