Victories are Stepping Stones
Philippians 3:13–14
“…forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
Marla Runyan was legally blind, losing most of her central vision to a degenerative eye disease. As a young athlete she competed in the Paralympics and won gold medals. By any standard, that was a remarkable finish line. She had reached the highest level available in her category. No one would have blamed her for celebrating that success and staying there. It would have been understandable. It would have been safe. It would have been enough.
But she refused to let a category define her ceiling. Instead of settling inside her victory, she treated it as a platform. She stepped into open competition against fully sighted athletes and qualified for the 2000 Olympic Games. She ran the 1500 meters seeing only blurred shapes and shadows and still finished eighth in the world. She did not deny her limitation. She simply refused to let limitation dictate her future.
Spiritually, it’s easy to treat past victories as finish lines. We look back at what God has done and start living off the memory of it instead of the pursuit of Him. A prayer He answered, a season He carried us through, a breakthrough we once experienced can quietly become the place we stop growing. We’re thankful, but we stop stretching. We remember the moment, but we stop moving toward the next step of obedience.
Paul refused to live that way. He was grateful for God’s work in his life, but he understood that following Christ is always forward-moving. Yesterday’s faithfulness was meant to strengthen today’s obedience. The real danger is not that we fail. It’s that we become satisfied too early. God is not finished shaping you at your last success. He is still inviting you into deeper trust, deeper surrender, and a fuller life with Him.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for every victory You have given me, but keep me from settling inside past success. Help me honor what You have done while pressing forward into what You are calling me toward. Give me courage to grow beyond comfort and gratitude that fuels obedience. I choose to keep moving with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
