Cross the River

Joshua 3:5
“Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you.”

The tribes east of the Jordan remind us that it is possible to travel far with God and still stop short of His promise. They weren’t beginners. They had seen miracles, survived the wilderness, and walked thousands of miles. Yet the final step required a decision. Crossing the river meant trust. It meant leaving what felt secure and stepping into what God had spoken. Every generation of believers eventually faces a river moment where faith must become action.

Florence Chadwick swam until the fog convinced her to stop. The shoreline was closer than she realized. But her story didn’t end there. Two months later she returned to the same waters. The fog rolled in again, just like before. The difference was internal. She kept a picture of the shoreline fixed in her mind and refused to quit. This time she finished the swim and broke the record. The same obstacle that stopped her once could not stop her twice. Failure did not end her story. It clarified her focus.

Reuben and Gad stopped short. Marla Runyan ran beyond what she could see. Florence went back and finished what she once abandoned. All three stories point to the same truth: the final stretch is often the most deceptive, but it is never beyond redemption. If you have settled before, you are not disqualified. The river is still there. The invitation still stands.

Consecration is preparation for crossing. Joshua told the people to set themselves apart because movement with God requires intentional surrender. Crossing rivers is not accidental. It is chosen. Many people want promise without consecration, breakthrough without obedience, and calling without cost. But God moves powerfully where hearts are prepared to follow fully. The river does not part for spectators. It parts for those willing to step.

Today may be a river day for you. A decision you’ve delayed. A step you’ve avoided. A comfort you’ve protected. God is still inviting movement. The land of less is always available, but so is the promise. The difference is not ability. It is willingness to trust Him one more step.

Prayer
Lord, prepare my heart to cross whatever river stands in front of me. Give me courage to step where You are leading and surrender what is holding me back. I choose consecration over comfort and obedience over fear. Lead me fully into Your promise. I trust You with the next step. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
