Follow the Presence
Joshua 3:3
“When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God… move out from your positions and follow it.”
Israel was standing at the edge of the Jordan River facing a future they had never experienced before. For forty years they had wandered in the wilderness, but now God was leading them into something new. Joshua’s instruction was simple but profound. When the ark moves, you move. The ark represented the presence of God. Their success would not depend on strategy, strength, or timing. It would depend on their willingness to follow where God was leading.
One of the greatest challenges of the Christian life is learning to follow God into unfamiliar places. We naturally prefer certainty, stability, and control. Yet the life of faith often leads us into places where we cannot see the outcome. God intentionally leads His people this way so that dependence on Him becomes the foundation of our lives. The Israelites had never crossed the Jordan at flood stage before. They had never taken possession of the promised land. But the presence of God would guide them step by step.
Jesus echoes this same principle in John 10:27 when He says, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” Christianity is not simply about believing doctrines or following traditions. It is about learning to recognize the voice of the Shepherd and moving when He moves. Faith is not passive agreement. It is active obedience.
Many believers remain spiritually stagnant because they stay in positions that feel comfortable rather than following the movement of God. The invitation of the Christian life is not to stand still but to walk behind the presence of the Lord wherever He leads.
Prayer
Father, help me recognize Your voice and follow Your leading. Give me the courage to move when You move and the humility to trust Your direction even when the path is unfamiliar. I want my life to be marked by obedience to Your presence. Lead me where You desire to take me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
