From Lobar to the Table
2 Samuel 9:1
“David asked, ‘Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?’”
Mephibosheth’s story begins long before he ever sits at the king’s table. As a young child, his life changed in a moment. News came that his grandfather Saul and his father Jonathan had been killed in battle. In that culture, when a new king took the throne, it was common practice to eliminate the entire family line of the previous king to prevent future threats. So his nurse grabbed him and ran in fear. In the chaos, she dropped him, and that fall left him lame in both feet for the rest of his life.
From that moment on, Mephibosheth lived in hiding in a place called Lodabar, a place known for lack, dryness, and isolation. He wasn’t just physically broken, he was living with the assumption that if the king ever found him, it would mean his death. His entire life was shaped by fear and by a misunderstanding of the heart of the king. He believed that if he was ever seen, he would be judged.
But everything shifts when David takes the throne. Instead of asking, “Who is left that I need to remove?” David asks, “Is there anyone left that I can show kindness to?” This was not normal. This was not expected. This was not how kings operated. David wasn’t motivated by insecurity, he was motivated by covenant. Because of his relationship with Jonathan, he chooses to extend grace to someone who could never earn it.
When Mephibosheth is brought before David, he comes in fear, expecting judgment. Instead, he receives kindness. David restores everything that had been lost to him and then does something even more unthinkable. He gives him a permanent seat at the king’s table. Not as a guest, not as an outsider, but as someone who would eat continually in the presence of the king.
This is not just a story about a king and a crippled man. This is a picture of the gospel. A broken man, living in hiding, expecting judgment, is brought into the presence of the king and receives grace instead of what he deserved. What Mephibosheth feared most was the very thing that would change his life.
Challenge for Today: Where have you been hiding because you misunderstood the heart of God? Take a step toward Him instead of away from Him.
Prayer:
Father, help me to see Your heart clearly. Where fear has caused me to hide, give me the courage to come to You. Thank You that You are not the King I feared, but the King who shows kindness and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
