You Must Be Born Again
John 3:3
“Jesus replied, ‘Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.’”
Nicodemus had everything most people thought mattered spiritually. He was educated, respected, disciplined, and deeply religious. He knew the Scriptures. He knew the law. He spent his life pursuing God through information and obedience. Yet when he stood face to face with Jesus, Christ cut through all of his accomplishments with one statement: “You must be born again.”
That statement would have shocked Nicodemus. Jesus was not talking to a criminal, a pagan, or an unbeliever who had never heard about God. He was talking to one of the most religious men in Israel. This is what makes John 3 so powerful. Jesus reveals that religion alone cannot save us. Knowledge alone cannot transform us. Church attendance, morality, and good intentions cannot produce spiritual life. Dead things cannot revive themselves. Only God can bring life where there is death.
Many people today are trying to add Jesus into an already existing life instead of surrendering to a completely new one. We want Jesus to improve us without changing us. We want Him to comfort us without confronting us. But Jesus did not come to make bad people slightly better. He came to make spiritually dead people alive. The Gospel is not self-improvement. It is resurrection.
When Jesus says “born again,” He is talking about a brand-new identity. A new heart. A new spirit. A new nature. Salvation is not behavior management. It is transformation from the inside out. The Kingdom of God is not entered through effort. It is entered through surrender.
Prayer
Father, thank You for loving me enough to offer me new life. Forgive me for the times I have tried to settle for religion instead of relationship. I surrender my old life, my old identity, and my old ways to You. Transform me from the inside out and help me live as someone who has truly been born again. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
