The Desires of Your Heart

"Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart." — Psalm 37:4

Psalm 37:4 is one of the most quoted—and misunderstood—verses in the Bible. Many people read it as though God is saying, "If you love Me enough, I'll give you everything you've always wanted." But that's not what David is saying.
Look at the progression. He says, "Trust in the Lord... dwell in the land... enjoy safe pasture... take delight in the Lord..." Before God ever talks about desires, He talks about relationship. Like sheep who remain close to their shepherd, David paints a picture of people who have learned to stay near God, trust His leadership, and delight in His presence.
As we delight in the Lord, something remarkable begins to happen. God doesn't simply fulfill our desires—He transforms them. The things that once consumed our attention begin to lose their grip, while new dreams, new passions, and new burdens begin to take root in our hearts. We find ourselves caring about things we never cared about before. We begin to love what God loves.
Looking back over my own life, I can see moments when God planted desires in my heart long before I understood what He was doing. I remember sitting on an airplane after visiting my brother in California and telling Shanon, "Wouldn't it be amazing to live here someday?" It wasn't part of our plan. It didn't make sense financially or professionally. It was simply a desire that seemed to appear out of nowhere.
A few years later, while sitting in a conference with thousands of students, I turned to Shanon again and quietly said, "I'm going to work for that pastor one day." At the time, there was no opportunity, no connection, and no roadmap that would ever make that possible. Yet years later, God connected the dots in ways neither of us could have imagined. Looking back, I don't simply see fulfilled dreams—I see the faithfulness of a Shepherd who was gently leading us long before we realized where He was taking us.
Of course, not every desire comes from God. Our own sinful nature can produce selfish ambitions, unhealthy cravings, and temptations that pull us away from Him. That's why every desire must be tested against God's Word. The Holy Spirit will never plant a desire that contradicts the Scriptures He inspired. If a desire leads us away from God's character or God's commands, we can be confident it didn't come from Him.
One of the beautiful ways the Shepherd leads His sheep is by changing what they love. As we walk closely with Jesus, our desires become less about building our own kingdom and more about participating in His. We begin to dream differently, love differently, and pursue different things because the Shepherd is quietly shaping our hearts from the inside out.

Father, thank You for caring not only about what I do but also about what I desire. Shape my heart until I begin to love what You love and pursue what You desire for my life.
