The Gift of Confirmation

"Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses." — 2 Corinthians 13:1

Have you ever had a moment where you felt like God was speaking to you, but you weren't completely sure? Maybe it was an opportunity, a new direction, or a dream that began to grow in your heart. You sensed the Holy Spirit stirring something inside of you, but you also wondered, "Is this really God, or is this just me?" If you've ever wrestled with that question, you're in good company.
One of the gracious ways God leads His children is through confirmation. While Paul wasn't specifically talking about hearing God's voice in 2 Corinthians 13, he quotes an important biblical principle from the Old Testament: "Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses." In its original context, this was about establishing truth in a legal matter. But the principle reminds us that wisdom is rarely built on a single impression.
Throughout Scripture, God often confirms what He is doing. Gideon asked for confirmation with the fleece. Samuel sought the counsel of Eli before realizing it was the Lord calling him. The church at Antioch worshiped and fasted together before sending Paul and Barnabas into ministry. Again and again, we see God graciously confirming His direction through His Word, His people, and His providence.
I've experienced this in my own life. As God began placing a vision in my heart for a piece of property near our church, it seemed almost impossible. The dream was bigger than our resources, bigger than our influence, and certainly bigger than anything I could accomplish on my own. But while God was stirring that vision in my heart, He was doing something almost identical in the heart of another believer. Neither of us knew what the other was thinking, yet God was leading us toward the same property with the same burden and the same desire to see His Kingdom advanced.
That didn't guarantee the outcome. It didn't mean everything would happen according to our timeline. What it did provide was confirmation that we weren't dreaming alone. It was another reminder that God is fully capable of speaking to more than one person at the same time.
As we seek God's direction, it's wise to ask Him for confirmation. Not because we're demanding another sign, but because we want to walk humbly. Confirmation keeps us from acting impulsively and reminds us that God is patient enough to make His leading clear. He isn't trying to hide His will from His children. Like a loving Shepherd, He delights in leading them one step at a time.

Prayer
Father, thank You for being patient with me as I learn to recognize Your voice. Give me the humility to seek confirmation and the wisdom to listen to godly counsel. Keep me from acting out of impulse or emotion, and teach me to trust that You are faithful to guide those who sincerely seek You. Amen.
Today's Practice
Think about one decision you're currently praying through. Take a sheet of paper and write down the ways God has already been leading you. Has He spoken through His Word? Through wise counsel? Through a growing desire? Through circumstances? Ask Him to continue confirming His direction in His perfect timing.
