Trust the Shepherd more than the Path

"He guides me along the right paths for his name's sake." — Psalm 23:3
Devotional
One of the hardest parts of following God is that He rarely shows us the entire journey. We naturally want a roadmap. We want to know where He's taking us, how long it will take, what obstacles we'll face, and how everything will turn out. God, however, usually offers us something much better than a detailed plan—He offers us His presence.
Psalm 23 reminds us that the Shepherd doesn't simply point His sheep toward the pasture and wish them luck. He leads them. Every step they take is taken under His watchful care. They don't have to know where the still waters are because the Shepherd does. They don't have to find the safest path because the Shepherd has already walked ahead of them.
I've discovered that God has often given me just enough direction for the next step, but rarely enough information for the next ten. Looking back over the major seasons of my life, I can clearly see His hand leading me. In the moment, however, I couldn't see what He was doing. When God stirred our hearts about California, He didn't show us every conversation, every relationship, or every open door that would eventually get us there. He simply invited us to trust Him one step at a time.
That's how the Shepherd works. He builds our faith by asking us to trust His character before He reveals His plan.
Sometimes we become so focused on discovering God's will that we miss the joy of walking with Him today. We convince ourselves that life will finally make sense once we know the next chapter. But faith has never been about having all the answers. Faith is choosing to trust the One who already does.
The older I get, the more convinced I become that God's greatest gift isn't simply His direction—it's His presence. If I have His presence, I can walk through uncertainty with confidence. If I know the Shepherd is leading me, I don't have to fear what lies around the next corner.
The Shepherd has never asked His sheep to figure everything out. He has simply asked them to keep following.

Prayer
Father, thank You for never asking me to walk alone. Forgive me for the times I've wanted a detailed roadmap more than I've wanted to trust You. Help me to rest in the confidence that You are always leading, even when I cannot see the destination. Teach me to follow You one faithful step at a time. Amen.

Take a few minutes today to write down three times in your life when you can clearly see God's faithfulness in hindsight. Thank Him for leading you then, and ask Him for the faith to trust Him with whatever you're facing today.
