Known by the Shepherd

"I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me." — John 10:14

As we've walked through these devotionals together, we've talked about recognizing God's voice, delighting in His presence, testing our desires, seeking confirmation, trusting His open doors, and following Him one step at a time. Every one of those lessons is important, but they all point to something even greater.
The heart of John 10 isn't ultimately about sheep recognizing the Shepherd. It's about the Shepherd knowing His sheep.
That's easy to overlook because we're usually focused on our ability to hear God. We wonder if we've missed His voice, misunderstood His leading, or taken a wrong turn somewhere along the journey. Jesus shifts our attention away from our performance and back to His faithfulness.
He says, "I know My sheep."
Before you ever recognized His voice, He knew yours. Before you ever prayed your first prayer, He knew your name. Before you surrendered your life to Him, He was already pursuing you. Long before you learned to trust Him, He had already proven Himself trustworthy. That's the beauty of the gospel. Our relationship with God doesn't begin with us finding Him. It begins with Him finding us.
When Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd, He isn't describing someone who simply points His sheep in the right direction. He's describing a Shepherd who walks ahead of them, protects them, provides for them, searches for them when they wander, and ultimately lays down His life so they can live.
That changes everything.
It means that even when you struggle to discern His voice, you don't have to live in fear. Your salvation doesn't rest on your ability to perfectly interpret every impression or every decision. It rests on the faithfulness of a Shepherd who refuses to abandon His sheep.
Over the years, I've discovered that God's guidance becomes much clearer when I stop obsessing over the future and start enjoying His presence. There have been seasons when I desperately wanted answers, and God simply invited me to trust Him. Looking back now, I wouldn't trade those seasons for anything because they taught me something far more valuable than knowing the next step—they taught me to know the Shepherd.
Maybe that's exactly where you find yourself today. You're waiting for direction. You're asking God to show you what's next. There's nothing wrong with praying that prayer. But don't let your pursuit of God's plan become greater than your pursuit of God's presence.
The Shepherd is still leading.
The Shepherd is still speaking.
The Shepherd is still faithful.
And if you belong to Him, you can rest in this unshakable truth: He knows exactly where you are, and He knows exactly how to lead you home.

Jesus, thank You for being my Good Shepherd. Thank You for knowing me completely, loving me unconditionally, and faithfully leading me every step of the way. Help me to seek Your presence above Your direction and to trust Your heart even when I cannot see the road ahead. Thank You for never giving up on me and for always leading me with grace and truth. Amen.

Take a slow walk today without headphones or distractions. As you walk, simply thank Jesus for the ways He has faithfully led you throughout your life. Instead of asking Him for the next step, spend your time thanking Him for being your Shepherd.
Remember This
The greatest comfort isn't that you know the Shepherd's voice. It's that the Shepherd knows you.
