WHY CHURCH?
“I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”—Matthew 16:18

Why church? It is a fair question. Why gather with other believers? Why organize part of your life around a local church? Why not simply believe in Jesus, read the Bible, and worship from home? The simplest answer is that the Church was Jesus’ idea.
When Jesus declared, “I will build My church,” He wasn’t talking about constructing a building or creating another religious organization. The word He used was ekklesia—a people called together around a shared identity and purpose. Jesus was announcing that He would form a people around Himself and send them into the world to continue His mission.
Notice that Jesus said, “I will build My church.” The Church belongs to Him. It is built on His identity, His teaching, His death and resurrection, and His authority. Pastors may lead it, volunteers may serve it, and people may gather within it, but Jesus alone owns it. That should change how we view the local church.
The Church is imperfect because it is filled with imperfect people. Some have been disappointed or even deeply hurt by a church, and those experiences should never be dismissed. But the failures of people do not cancel the purpose of Jesus. He is still building His Church.
Every time someone encounters the love of God, Jesus is building His Church. Every time a marriage is restored, someone is baptized, a child learns about Jesus, a need is met, or a person discovers that they no longer have to walk through life alone, Jesus is building His Church.
The Church is not humanity’s attempt to reach God. It is God’s plan for reaching the world. Jesus could have chosen any method to carry His gospel forward, but He chose people—ordinary people called together, transformed by His presence, and united around His mission. That includes you. You were not invited merely to attend a service; you were invited to become part of what Jesus is building.

Prayer
Jesus, thank You for building Your Church and inviting me to become part of it. Heal the places where disappointment has distorted my view of Your Church. Help me see it according to Your intention, and show me the part You have called me to play. Amen.
