THE WAY IS OPEN
Since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus...let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith. Hebrews 10:19-22
DEVOTIONAL
Under the Old Covenant, access to the Most Holy Place was restricted. Only the high priest could enter, and he entered only once each year on the Day of Atonement. A heavy curtain separated the place representing God's presence from everyone outside it. That curtain communicated something unmistakable: sinful humanity could not casually enter the presence of a holy God.
When Jesus died upon the cross, the curtain in the temple was torn from top to bottom. This was not merely a dramatic event. It was a declaration from heaven. Through the sacrifice of Jesus, a new and living way into God's presence had been opened.
We do not gain access to God because we sing well, pray eloquently, behave perfectly, or create the right atmosphere. We enter by the blood of Jesus. Worship does not earn access to God's presence. Worship is our response to the access Jesus purchased for us.
Hebrews tells us what to do with this extraordinary privilege: "Let us draw near." The door is open, but we still have to draw near. It is possible to attend a worship service without intentionally turning our attention toward God. We can hear the music while thinking about our schedule. We can repeat the lyrics while remaining emotionally and spiritually disconnected. We can stand in a room filled with worship and never personally draw near.
God is not asking us to perform for Him. He is inviting us to approach Him with confidence - not confidence in ourselves, but confidence in what Jesus accomplished. We can come with our gratitude, burdens, questions, fears, and failures. We do not have to hide. Jesus has made a way.
Generations before us could only imagine the access we have been given. May we never become casual about an invitation that cost Jesus His life.
REFLECT
Do I approach God confidently, or do guilt and shame keep me at a distance?
Have I confused worship with earning God's presence?
What commonly distracts me from intentionally drawing near to God?
TODAY'S STEP
Set aside ten uninterrupted minutes. Remove distractions, play a worship song, and intentionally draw near to God. Thank Jesus for opening the way into His presence.
PRAYER
Jesus, thank You for opening a new and living way into the presence of God. I could never earn this access, but You purchased it through
Your sacrifice. Help me stop standing at a distance. Quiet my distractions, free me from shame, and teach me to draw near with a sincere
heart and full assurance of faith. Amen.
