THE CHURCH SINGS TOGETHER

DEVOTIONAL
Corporate worship moves in two directions. Paul says we sing and make melody to the Lord, but he also says we address one another. Our worship is directed toward God, yet it can strengthen the people standing around us.
There will be Sundays when you enter the room full of faith and ready to worship. You will have seen God answer prayer, provide unexpectedly, or open a door. Praise will come easily. There will be other Sundays when you barely make it through the doors. You may be grieving, exhausted, disappointed, or wondering whether God is still working. You may know the words to the song but struggle to find the strength to sing them.
Then the person two seats away begins declaring the faithfulness of God. They may not know anything about your situation, but their worship reminds you of what your pain caused you to forget. You hear the Church proclaiming that God is faithful, present, powerful, and still working. Their voices help awaken your faith.
We do not merely worship beside one another. In some seasons, we worship for one another. We lend our voices, faith, and praise to people who do not yet have the strength to lift their own. Sometimes you bring the song, and sometimes the Church carries the song until you can sing again.
This is one reason gathering matters. Listening to worship music alone can be meaningful, but it cannot completely reproduce the experience of the assembled Church declaring truth together. Corporate worship reminds us that we are not following Jesus alone.
Your participation matters. The person near you may need to hear your voice declaring the goodness of God. Your worship may help someone remember that God has not abandoned them.

When has another person's worship strengthened my faith?
Do I think of corporate worship only as a private moment between God and me?
How might my participation encourage someone else?
TODAY'S STEP
During the next corporate worship gathering, participate intentionally. Sing clearly and remember that your praise may strengthen someone standing nearby.
PRAYER
Lord, thank You for placing me within Your Church. Thank You for the voices that have carried truth when my own voice felt weak. Help me worship with an awareness of the people around me. Use my praise to honor You and strengthen someone who needs to remember Your faithfulness. Amen.
