DRAW NEAR
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. James 4:8
DEVOTIONAL
Prayer is not primarily a transaction. It is a relationship. If prayer becomes nothing more than giving God a list of requests, we will eventually become frustrated whenever His answers do not arrive according to our expectations. But the greatest gift of prayer is not merely receiving something from God's hand. The greatest gift is drawing near to His heart.
God already knows what we need before we ask. Prayer does not provide an uninformed God with new information. Prayer brings our hearts into communion with Him. It creates space for us to recognize His presence, hear His voice through Scripture, surrender our will, and become more aware of His activity in our lives.
Jesus taught us to begin prayer with the words, 'Our Father.' Before prayer is about provision, it is about relationship. Before we ask for daily bread, we remember who God is. Before we present our needs, we worship His name and surrender to His Kingdom.
Time in God's presence changes us. Anxiety begins giving way to trust. Anger softens. Confusion becomes clearer. Our desires begin aligning with His purposes. We may enter prayer asking God to change everyone around us and discover that He first wants to change something within us.
You do not need impressive language to draw near to God. You can come honestly. Tell Him when you are grateful. Tell Him when you are frightened. Bring Him your disappointment and questions. Sit quietly. Read His Word and respond to what He reveals. The goal of prayer is not only to get an answer. The goal of prayer is to know God.
REFLECT
Has prayer become more transactional than relational in your life?
What distractions most often prevent you from becoming still in God's presence?
TODAY'S STEP
Spend ten uninterrupted minutes with God without beginning with requests. Worship Him, thank Him, and sit quietly in His presence.
PRAYER
Father, thank You for inviting me to draw near. I do not want to know only what You can do for me; I want to know You. Quiet my heart, remove distractions, and help me become aware of Your presence. Change my desires until they reflect Your heart. In Jesus' name, amen.
