DIG IT UP AND USE IT
“Fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you…” —2 Timothy 1:6 ESV
Devotional
Fear says, “Bury it.” Paul told Timothy, “Fan it into flame.” Those are two very different responses to what God has placed within us. Something buried receives no oxygen, produces no light, and serves no one. A flame that is tended can grow, provide warmth, and help others see. The gift may begin small, but it was never meant to remain hidden.
Over the past week, you have examined what fear caused you to hide. You have considered how your view of God affects your willingness to act. You have confronted perfectionism, separated faithfulness from guaranteed success, and refused to let failure become your identity. You have seen that Jesus can meet, forgive, and restore people at the place where they failed.
Now the question becomes practical: What will you do with what God placed in your hands? Inspiration without action eventually fades. A buried calling is not uncovered by one emotional moment. It is uncovered through repeated acts of faithfulness.
You may not be ready to launch the entire vision, but you can take one step. You may not be able to write the whole book, but you can write one page. You may not know how the conversation will end, but you can make the call. You may not feel completely confident, but confidence often grows after obedience begins.
Do not confuse starting small with thinking small. The master commended servants who were faithful with little. God can work through what looks small when it is placed into His hands. Your responsibility is to stop burying, begin stewarding, and remain faithful. Fear may still speak when you take the step. Courage is not waiting until fear becomes silent. Courage is refusing to give fear the final word. Dig it up. Put it to work. Fan it into flame. Then trust God with what happens next.
Examine the Fear
What specific gift, dream, assignment, or act of obedience have you identified this week?
What is the smallest meaningful step you can take within the next seven days?
Who can encourage you, pray with you, and ask whether you followed through?
What truth will you repeat when fear tells you to bury it again?
Today’s Faith Step
Write a simple seven-day action plan with one concrete step and a date. Tell one trusted person what you intend to do and ask that person to follow up. Do not promise a result. Commit to faithfulness.
Prayer
Father, thank You for every gift, opportunity, and assignment You have entrusted to me. I refuse to let fear bury my obedience. Help me begin where I am, use what I have, and remain faithful with the next step. Failure does not get the final word. Fear does not get the final word. Jesus gets the final word. Amen.
