REJECTED WITH JESUS

“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.” —John 15:18

Devotional
Jesus never promised that following Him would earn us everyone’s approval. He prepared His disciples for the opposite. If people rejected Him, there would be moments when people rejected them because they belonged to Him.

This does not mean every negative reaction proves we are being persecuted. Sometimes people reject our behavior because we have been rude, insensitive, or unkind. Being offensive is not the same as being persecuted for Jesus. We should always examine our attitude and make sure our words carry the character of Christ.

But even when we speak with love and live with integrity, obedience may still bring rejection. Biblical convictions will not always agree with popular opinion. Following Jesus may require us to stand apart from a crowd we would rather remain part of.

Jesus understands that pain. Isaiah described Him as despised and rejected. He was misunderstood, mocked, falsely accused, and abandoned. Yet Jesus did not change His identity or compromise His mission to regain the crowd’s approval. He remained obedient all the way to the cross.

When we experience rejection because of our faith, we are not following a Savior who is unfamiliar with it. Jesus has already walked that road. He knows what it feels like to be misunderstood and rejected while doing the will of the Father.

We do not have to chase rejection, and we should never use our convictions as permission to mistreat someone. But neither can we become so afraid of rejection that we walk away from Jesus to remain accepted by the crowd. I would rather be rejected for standing with Jesus than accepted because I walked away from Him.

Examine the Fear
Have you mistaken being offensive for being faithful in any relationship?

Where have you been tempted to compromise your faith to avoid rejection?

How does knowing that Jesus understands rejection change the way you face it?

Today’s Faith Step
If you are facing rejection, examine your heart and your behavior honestly. Apologize if you have acted without love. But if the issue is faithful obedience to Jesus, remain steady. Ask a mature believer to pray with you and remind you that you are not standing alone.

Prayer
Jesus, thank You for understanding the pain of rejection. Keep my heart humble and my words loving. Correct me when my behavior does not represent You well, but give me courage when obedience costs me acceptance. I would rather stand with You than gain the approval of a crowd without You. Amen.
