LIVING FROM ACCEPTANCE

“He chose us in him… In love he predestined us for adoption.” —Ephesians 1:4–5

Devotional
Near the end of Saul’s story, he makes one final request of Samuel: “Honor me now, please, before the elders of my people and before Israel.” Saul had confessed his sin, but he was still thinking about how he appeared in front of the people.

Saul was losing the kingdom, yet he remained concerned about protecting his image. He wanted Samuel to stand beside him so the elders would continue to honor him. Saul was more concerned about looking right in front of people than being right with God.

Trying to protect an image is exhausting. We want everyone to believe we are doing well. We want them to approve of our decisions, affirm our value, and reassure us that we belong. So we perform, compromise, and become whatever the room expects us to be.

Jesus came to set us free from that life. He did not protect His reputation. He was despised, rejected, mocked, and falsely accused. Yet He remained obedient all the way to the cross. Jesus was willing to be rejected by people to accomplish the will of His Father. He was rejected so that we could be accepted.

Because of Jesus, we have been chosen and adopted into God’s family. We are not accepted because we performed well enough, kept everybody happy, or convinced the room to approve of us. We are accepted because of grace. We live from acceptance, not for acceptance. We do not obey God to earn a place in His family. We obey because, through Jesus, He has already welcomed us into His family.

Freedom from the fear of people does not mean we stop caring about people. It means we stop making their approval our identity. We can love people without needing them to validate us. We can listen without allowing their opinions to become louder than God’s voice. We can disappoint people and still obey God. When you know whose you are, you can stop asking the crowd who you are.

Examine the Fear
Whose voice has become too loud in your life?

How has that person’s approval or criticism affected the way you see yourself?

What would change if you truly believed you were already known, chosen, and accepted by God?

Today’s Faith Step

Complete this statement: “I have been living for the approval of ______.” Surrender that relationship to God. Then declare: “I will love people, but I will not live for their approval. I will listen to people, but I will not allow their opinions to define me. I will honor people, but I will obey God.”

Prayer
Father, thank You for choosing me, loving me, and adopting me through Jesus. I am tired of performing for acceptance You have already given me. Set me free from every voice that has become louder than Yours. I will love people without making them my lord. I will live from acceptance, not for acceptance. When fear asks the crowd who I am, remind me that I already belong to You. Amen.
